QUEENS, N.Y. – The Seton Hall baseball team won its 13th straight game, the longest win streak in the nation, with a 5-3 victory over Michigan at Citi Field on Tuesday. The victory improves the Pirates’ record to 34-16 overall, which matches their win total of each of the last two seasons. It’s also their 17th win in the last 18 games. Seton Hall and Michigan traded runs in the second inning as the Pirates took advantage of a leadoff Mike Genovese (Livingston, N.J.) walk. A couple of groundouts later Genovese was able to advance over to third base and he came home to score on an Alex Lakatos wild pitch. The Wolverines’ first run was also a result of the leadoff man reaching base, only in Michigan’s case Jacob Cronenworth doubled to deep left field. Seton Hall starter Anthony Elia (Flanders, N.J.) nearly worked his way out of the jam, striking out Kevin White in three pitches to record the second out, but Kyle Jusick dialed up a two-out single up the middle to tie the game at 1-1. Michigan scored again in its half of the third, with Michael O’Neill launching a solo home run to left-center field, but from that point Elia settled in to retire eight of the next nine batters he faced, providing Seton Hall an opportunity to take back control of the game. The Pirates’ struck in the top of the fifth inning as sophomore Sal Annunziata (Bronx, N.Y.) led off the frame with a double to left field. Junior Dillon Hamlin (Colts Neck, N.J.) bunted Annunziata over to third, and he came home to score via a Chris Selden (Allenhurst, N.J.) RBI groundout to short, knotting the score at 2-2. Seton Hall’s bats really came alive in the sixth inning as the Pirates recorded three base hits and had five players reach base in a two-run rally that resulted with their largest lead of the game. Annunziata drove in the first run of the inning, smacking a single to right center to score Scott Kalamar (Bethlehem, Pa.) from third. Tyler Boyd (Succasunna, N.J.) recorded the second RBI single of the frame, driving a hard grounder to the right side allowing Genovese to cross the plate. The Pirates padded that lead with another run in the seventh, stretching their advantage to 5-2. Dangerous base runner Zack Granite (Staten Island, N.Y.) drew a leadoff walk and moved over to third on a Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) sacrifice bunt and Kalamar groundout. This time senior Giuseppe Papaccio (Nutley, N.J.) came up big, lacing his BIG EAST leading 23rd double of the season down the line in right field, scoring Granite easily on the play. Elia found some trouble in the bottom of the sixth, sitting down the first two batters he faced before issuing three straight walks. Freshman Sam Burum (Robbinsville, N.J.) relieved him with the bases loaded and got Patrick Biondi to ground out to third on just one pitch. Burum went on to toss a perfect seventh inning before being relieved by Ricky Mangione (Orange, Conn.) to start the eighth. Mangione gave up just a single base hit, an O’Neill double to left, but sat down the other three batters he faced. Sophomore Jose Lopez (Cranbury, N.J.) gave up a run in the ninth, but was able to stifle the Michigan rally and collect his second save of the season. Elia improved to 6-2 with the win. The left-hander pitched 5.2 innings, while giving up just two earned runs. Annunziata and Kalamar both reached base three times. Annunziata finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored and a walk. Kalamar walked three times and scored a run. Seton Hall will wrap up the 2013 regular season with a three-game set with St. John’s starting Thursday at Owen T. Carroll Field. Game time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
