SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall baseball team gave up three runs in the top of the first inning and couldn’t recover, falling to St. John’s, 4-3, on Friday. The loss snaps Seton Hall’s nation-leading 13-game win streak and eliminates the Pirates from regular season title contention. It’s also the first loss when Jon Prosinski (Skillman, N.J.) starts since March 1. Seton Hall (34-17, 16-6) wasn’t without its offensive chances. The Pirates left 15 men on base, nine through the first four innings. In the top of the first inning, St. John’s scored three times on four hits. Seton Hall played catch up for the rest of the game. The Pirates got a run back in the bottom of the first on a throwing error by St. John’s second baseman Bret Dennis, which allowed Zack Granite (Staten Island, N.Y.) to score from second base, but the Pirates left two runners stranded. In the bottom of the second inning, Seton Hall left two on base, and in the third, Seton Hall loaded the bases with one out, but was unable to drive in a run. St. John’s (23-31, 10-12) added an insurance run in the top of the fourth, but it was of the unearned variety. Prosinski rolled through the middle of the game. After the unearned run scored, the Pirates’ ace retired 11 straight batters. Prosinski was saddled with the loss after 7.1 innings of work, while giving up three earned runs and striking out four. He needs just two strikeouts to surpass Jason Grilli for the most in Seton Hall history. In the seventh inning, Seton Hall drew closer on an RBI single by Scott Kalamar (Bethlehem, Pa.), which scored Giuseppe Papaccio (Nutley, N.J.) with the Pirates’ second run. The following inning, Granite singled to left field, scoring pinch hitter Ryan Sullivan (Stony Point, N.Y.) to draw the Pirates to within one run, 4-3. Seton Hall would put the tying run in scoring position in the ninth, but alas, couldn’t get the timely hit. The Pirates had eight hits as a team. Granite led Seton Hall going 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI. The Pirates will return to action tomorrow for game two of this three-game series with St. John’s. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
