SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Senior Scott Kalamar (Bethlehem, Pa.) hit a two-RBI, go-ahead triple in the bottom of the sixth inning to propel the Seton Hall baseball team to a 4-2 victory over St. John’s in the Pirates’ regular season finale on Saturday. The victory is Seton Hall’s 15th in its last 16 games, and coupled with Pittsburgh’s loss at Louisville, clinches the number-two seed in the 2013 BIG EAST Championship set to begin on Wednesday in Clearwater, Fla. Starter Josh Prevost (Belle Mead, N.J.) ran into trouble early and gave up solo runs in the top of the second and third, which gave St. John’s a 2-0 lead through three innings. Jose Lopez (Cranbury, N.J.) entered the game in the top of the fourth inning and ran into trouble immediately. After walking the leadoff batter, Lopez hit Danny Bethea. A wild pitch then moved both runners into scoring position with no outs. But the sophomore right-hander buckled down and worked his way out of the jam. He retired Jimmy Brennan on a grounder to second for the first out and struck out Ed Blankmeyer for out number two. After an intentional walk loaded the bases, Lopez got out of the fourth inning unscathed when Martin Kelly grounded out to third. In the bottom of the sixth inning, the dormant Pirates’ offense finally broke out. Freshman Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) led off with a double down the right field line and Giuseppe Papaccio (Nutley, N.J.) drove him in with an RBI single to left center. Sophomore Sal Annunziata (Bronx, N.Y.) picked up the third straight Pirates’ hit to start the inning with a single to left center, advancing Papaccio to second. That’s when Kalamar sent his go-ahead, two-run triple into right center field to give Seton Hall a 3-2 lead. With one out, the Pirates executed the squeeze play perfectly as Kalamar scored on a bunt by Ryan Sullivan (Stony Point, N.Y.) to give Seton Hall a 4-2 lead. Lopez picked up the victory in relief, pitching three innings, while giving up just one hit. He improves to 3-3 on the season. Seton Hall’s bullpen was excellent on Saturday. After Lopez exited, freshman Sam Burum (Robbinsville, N.J.) and junior Brian Gilbert (Toms River, N.J.) combined to record the last nine outs in order. Burum pitched perfect seventh and eighth innings, while Gilbert sent St. John’s down in order in the ninth for his sixth save. Papaccio was the lone Pirate with multiple hits. He finished 2-for-4 with a triple, an RBI and a run scored. The Pirates have now concluded the 2013 regular season with a sparkling overall record of 36-17 and 18-6 in BIG EAST Conference play. They will now enter the BIG EAST Championship as the #2 seed, playing at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
