CLEARWATER, FLA. – The second-seeded Seton Hall baseball team opened play at the 2013 BIG EAST Championship with a 5-0 loss to seventh-seeded Notre Dame on Wednesday. The Pirates ran into an old nemesis in Notre Dame starting pitcher Adam Norton who has had their number lately. Norton entered the game with victories over the Pirates earlier this regular season and in last season’s BIG EAST Championship, which eliminated Seton Hall. Norton was masterful again today, throwing a complete-game shutout with seven strikeouts and no walks. Offensively, Notre Dame (32-23) got on the board right away. Frank DeSico led off the game with a double into the left field corner, and two batters later, was driven in by Eric Jagielo with the game’s first run. In the top of the fifth, Seton Hall starter Jon Prosinski (Skillman, N.J.) retired the first batter, but then gave up three straight singles, the third of which plated Notre Dame’s second run to give them a 2-0 lead. Prosinski took the loss, throwing 5.1 innings, while giving up 10 hits and four earned runs. His lone strikeout ties him with Jason Grill for Seton Hall career record (256). The big blow came in the top of the sixth, however. With one out, Notre Dame’s Lane Richards singled and Blaise Lezynski followed with a two-run home run over the right field fence to extend the Irish lead to 4-0. Lezynski entered the game batting .234 with just 47 at bats. Seton Hall (36-18) couldn’t get the offense going against Norton. The Pirates left seven men on base and were 0-for-7 in the game with runners in scoring position. Senior Giuseppe Papaccio (Nutley, N.J.) was the lone Pirate with multiple hits. He finished 2-for-4. The Seton Hall bullpen pitched relatively well. Jose Lopez (Cranbury, N.J.), Conor Krauss (Randolph, N.J.) and Ricky Mangione (Orange, Conn.) combined to allow just one earned run over the final 3.2 innings. Seton Hall will return to action tomorrow (Thursday) when it faces sixth-seeded St. John’s in a matchup between the last two BIG EAST Tournament champions. First pitch is scheduled for 10:00 am. The loser will be eliminated from the 2013 BIG EAST Championship.
