ROCKVILLE, MD. - The Seton Hall baseball team had its five-game win streak snapped with a 4-3 walk-off loss at Georgetown on Friday.Georgetown (13-21, 1-7) pitching allowed eight walks and three hit-by-pitches, but the high-powered Pirates offense couldn't take advantage, mustering just two hits.
Georgetown's Will Brown was slated to be the starter, but was a late scratch, and David Ellingson, Saturday's scheduled starter, was moved up. The Pirates greeted Ellingson rudely at the start, erupting for three runs in the top of the first inning. Derek Jenkins (Annandale, N.J.) drew a leadoff walk. Georgetown third baseman Curtiss Pomeroy threw wide of first base on Zack Weigel's (Oak Park, Ill.) sacrifice bunt attempt, and two runners moved into scoring position. Kyle Grimm (Bergenfield, N.J.) followed with a walk to load the bases with no outs. Sal Annunziata (Bronx, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch to force in the first run of the game. A wild pitch allowed Weigel to score the second Pirates' run and Tyler Boyd (Succasunna, N.J.) grounded out to short, but a third Pirates' run scored in the process.
Seton Hall (26-8, 2-3) starter Anthony Elia (Flanders, N.J.) also ran into trouble in the first. Elia gave up three hits, walked a batter and hit a batter, but limited the damage to only two runs.
Georgetown got to Elia again in the bottom of the fifth. The first three batters of the inning recorded hits, and a sacrifice fly tied the game at three. Freshman Ryan Testani (Shelton, Conn.) came on in relief and quickly recorded the final two outs to keep the game tied.
Testani pitched wonderfully in relief until running into trouble in the ninth. He walked the leadoff batter and threw away a sacrifice bunt attempt allowing both Georgetown runners to reach safely. After a fly out allowed the winning run to move to third base, Testani intentionally walked Bo Hall to load the bases. Left-hander Anthony Pacillo (Lyndhurst, N.J.) came into the game and gave up a single to Nick Collins on a 1-2 pitch, which sent Georgetown home winners.
Testani took the hard-luck loss. The right-hander pitched a career-high four innings in relief and gave up just one hit.
Seton Hall will complete its three-game series with Georgetown at Shirley Povich Field tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
