SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Sophomore Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) went 3-for-4, but it wasn't enough as St. John's rallied from a 3-0 deficit to defeat the Seton Hall baseball team, 4-3, in the opening game of Saturday's double-header.With the loss, Seton Hall cements itself as the #3 seed in the upcoming BIG EAST Championship.
Seton Hall built a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth as it was able to take advantage of some wildness by St. John's starter Ryan McCormick and poor defense. Weigel led off the inning with a double. Kyle Grimm (Bergenfield, N.J.) was hit by a pitch and Sal Annunziata (Bronx, N.Y.) reached on an infield single to load the bases with no outs. McCormick then walked D.J. Ruhlman (Belle Mead, N.J.) to force in the game's first run. With one out and the bases still loaded, Joe Poduslenko (Glen Mills, Pa.) hit a grounder to the second baseman, whose throw sailed high, allowing both Annunziata and Grimm to score to give The Hall a 3-0 advantage.
St. John's however, got a single run back in the fifth and erupted for three more runs in the sixth inning. Five different Seton Hall pitchers saw action in the sixth inning with all three runs being charged to starter Anthony Pacillo (Lyndhurst, N.J.).
The Pirates were unable to score again in the seven-inning game. As per BIG EAST rules, if a double-header needs to be played on the final day of the regular season, the first game must be only a seven-inning contest.
Pacillo took his first loss of the season and falls to 4-1.
Ruhlman reached base three times for Seton Hall, going 2-for-2 with a walk and an RBI.
