MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Sophomore Zach Prendergast (Horsham, Pa.) threw seven no-hit innings as the Seton Hall baseball team shut out Cornell, 3-0, on Friday for its first victory of the 2015 season.
Prendergast was masterful in his first start of the season. The right-hander pitched seven innings and didn't surrender a hit. Cornell only reach base via a pair of walks and hit-by-pitches.
Sam Burum (Robbinsville, N.J.) pitched a perfect eighth inning and struck out the first batter of the ninth before being replaced by Anthony Elia (Flanders, N.J.). Cornell's Jordan Winawer followed with a slow roller, perfectly placed between first and second, which broke up the combined no-hitter. Elia retired the next two batters in order to record his first career save.
Seton Hall (1-3) broke through in the top of the second inning. D.J. Ruhlman (Belle Mead, N.J.) drew a leadoff walk on four pitches and was moved to second on a perfect sacrifice bunt by Tyler Boyd (Succasunna, N.J.). On the next pitch, Mike Caputo (Morganville, N.J.) singled up the middle to score Ruhlman with the first run of the game.
The Pirates' first run aside, the game was a pitchers' duel through the first four innings. Cornell starter Michael Byrne gave up the one run, but struck out six Seton Hall batters. Meanwhile, Prendergast kept the Big Red hitless while striking out four.
In the bottom of the fifth, Seton Hall got its offense going again. Jackson Martin (Collegeville, Pa.) put down a bunt to lead off and the pitcher threw wide of first base allowing Martin to scamper down to second base. Derek Jenkins (Annandale, N.J.) put down a sacrifice bunt, but reached base when Cornell attempted to get the lead runner, and Martin was safe at third. Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) walked to load the bases and Kyle Grimm (Bergenfield, N.J.) slapped a two-RBI single up the middle to extend the Pirates' lead to 3-0.
Grimm and Caputo had two hits apiece for Seton Hall. Caputo reached base a team-high three times.
Seton Hall will return to action tomorrow for a double-header. The Pirates will face #1 Virginia at 3:00 p.m. and Hartford at 7:00 p.m.
