PORT CHARLOTTE, FLA. - Junior Derek Jenkins (Annandale, N.J.) went 5-for-6 with three RBIs as the Seton Hall baseball team routed Saint Joseph's, 16-9, on Wednesday.
Jenkins' five-hit game is the first for a Seton Hall player since current assistant coach Mark Pappas had five hits vs. Georgetown on May 15, 2008. Jenkins also had a triple, a stolen base and four runs scored.
Twenty-four hours after setting season-highs in runs and hits in a victory over Florida International, Seton Hall did it again, totaling 16 runs and 18 hits on Wednesday.
Alex Falconi (Freeport, N.Y.) reached base four times for a second consecutive game. The Pirates' backstop went 3-for-5 with an RBI, a double, a hit-by-pitch and four runs scored. D.J. Ruhlman (Belle Mead, N.J.) and Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) also reached base four times each. Ruhlman was 2-for-4 with two walks, a double, a stolen base and a run scored. Weigel was 2-for-5 with a double walk, a hit-by-pitch, two RBIs and three runs scored.
Like Tuesday, Seton Hall built a sizeable lead, before falling behind and then winning in the end.
The Hall (3-8) took a 4-0 advantage thanks in large part to a three-run second inning. Falconi led off with a single and moved to second on a ground out by Chris Chiaradio (Teaneck, N.J.). Jenkins and Weigel followed with back-to-back singles, the second of which scored Falconi. With two outs, and two in scoring position, Kyle Grimm (Bergenfield, N.J.) hit a grounder to short, but the shortstop booted the ball, which allowed both Jenkins and Weigel to score for a four-run lead.
Saint Joseph's (2-9) struck back however, with runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings. After a single run in the third, the Hawks tied the game at four with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, fueled by a two-run triple by Deon Stafford. In the fifth, they struck for three more to take a 7-4 advantage.
But the Pirate offense wasn't done. Seton Hall erupted for their largest single-inning offensive output so far this season with a six-run sixth inning in which 12 men came to the plate. Jenkins singled to lead off and both Weigel and Jackson Martin (Collegeville, Pa.) followed with walks to load the bases with no outs. Grimm singled to score the Pirates' fifth run. After Ruhlman popped up for the first out, Sal Annunziata (Bronx, N.Y.) doubled to left field to plate two more runs and tie the game at seven. Matt Fortin (Nashua, N.H.) grounded out, but it scored Grimm with the go-ahead run. With two outs, Falconi was hit by a pitch and Chiaradio walked to load the bases again. Jenkins followed with his second single of the inning to score Annunziata, and Weigel was hit by a pitch to force in Falconi to put the Pirates firmly in front, 10-7.
From there, the Pirates never trailed again. In the seventh, Seton Hall added four more insurance runs, highlighted by Fortin's two-RBI single. In the ninth, the Pirates extended their lead to 16-7. Rob Dadona (Staten Island, N.Y.) doubled to right field in his first collegiate at bat to drive in a run and Jenkins followed with a single to plate Dadona.
Sophomore Ryan Testani (Shelton, Conn.) got the win with an inning of relief. Chris Morris (Matawan, N.J.) may have thrown the best of any Pirate pitcher on the day. The freshman tossed 3.1 innings and was cruising towards a save before giving up a two-run home run in the ninth.
Seton Hall will return to action on Friday, March 13 as it faces Lehigh as part of the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Fla. First pitch is scheduled for 10:30 a.m.
