SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Senior Kyle Grimm (Bergenfield, N.J.) went 3-for-4, but the Seton Hall baseball team fell to Connecticut, 6-3, in game two of Sunday's double-header, the series finale.
Connecticut (13-8) recorded 14 hits and scored in each of the first three innings to force the Pirates to play catch up for most of the game.
After the Huskies scored a single run in the top of the first, the Pirates' offense responded in the bottom of the inning. Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) walked to lead off the inning and moved to second when Alex Falconi (Freeport, N.Y.) reached on a fielding error by UConn's second baseman. Grimm followed with an RBI single to right field to tie the game at one. Falconi came in to score with Seton Hall's go-ahead run on an RBI groundout by D.J. Ruhlman (Belle Mead, N.J.).
The Pirates' lead however, was short-lived as Connecticut struck for two more runs in the top of the second to take a 3-2 advantage, and Seton Hall never led again.
Trailing 5-2, Seton Hall got a run back in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, Ruhlman was singled home by Tyler Boyd (Succasunna, N.J.) to cut the Huskies lead to 5-3, but the Pirates couldn't get closer.
Seton Hall (7-10) used six pitchers total in the game. Among them, sophomore Joe DiBenedetto (Staten Island, N.Y.) made his season debut, and Zach Schellenger (Malvern, Pa.) made his first collegiate appearance. Schellenger got the start, but was scheduled to have limited work.
Grimm was the lone Pirate with multiple hits. Weigel reached base twice for the second time on Sunday.
Seton Hall will return to action on Tuesday, March 24 when it hosts Princeton at Owen T. Carroll Field. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
