SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Senior Tyler Boyd (Succasunna, N.J.) hit an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning to cap a dramatic three-run rally as the Seton Hall baseball team edged Princeton, 6-5, on Tuesday.
Trailing 5-3 entering the bottom of the ninth, the Pirates quickly found themselves down to their final out with the bases empty. Alex Falconi (Freeport, N.Y.) got the rally started by drawing a walk. Freshman Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.) was called on to pinch run and was driven home on a double by Kyle Grimm (Bergenfield, N.J.), which cut the Princeton lead to 5-4. D.J. Ruhlman (Belle Mead, N.J.) singled to left field, which scored Grimm with the tying run, and advanced into scoring position on a throwing error by the Princeton left fielder. Sal Annunziata (Bronx, N.Y.) walked, which brought Boyd to the plate for the dramatic finish. Boyd hit the ball hard and the Princeton second baseman got his glove on it, but it ricocheted into right field and Ruhlman scored with the winning run.
Seton Hall (8-10) wouldn't have needed to rally had it not been for a Princeton comeback in the top of the ninth inning. Annunziata's second home run of the season, a moon shot that hit off the fourth level of the Seton Hall parking deck in left field, gave The Hall a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the eighth. But the Tigers regrouped and scored three times in the top of the ninth aided by a pair of Seton Hall errors to take a 5-3 lead.
The victory is the Pirates' first of the walk-off variety this season.
Joe DiBenedetto (Staten Island, N.Y.) got the win in relief despite giving up the go-ahead runs in the ninth. Seton Hall starter Anthony Pacillo (Lyndhurst, N.J.) pitched well in his fifth start of the season. The sophomore went 6.2 innings and gave up two earned runs, while striking out a season-high seven batters and walking three.
Annunziata and Boyd led the Pirates with two hits apiece. Both also reach base three times. Annunziata went 2-for-4 with a walk, a run scored, two RBIs and a home run. Boyd was 2-for-4 with a walk and the game-winning RBI.
Seton Hall will return to action tomorrow as it hosts Lafayette at Owen T. Carroll Field. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
