SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Freshman Shane McCarthy (Fair Haven, N.J.) pitched a complete-game shutout in only his third career start as the Seton Hall baseball team blanked Connecticut, 3-0, in game one of Sunday's double-header.
McCarthy gave up six hits, struck out five and didn't walk a single batter to improve to 2-1 on the young season.
The right-hander gave up back-to-back singles with one out in the first, but was able to get out of the inning unscathed. After the threat, McCarthy settled in and retired 14 straight batters before surrendering a double to lead off the sixth inning. He got the next three outs however, and kept the Huskies off the scoreboard. Connecticut recorded a two-out single in the eighth and a one-out double in the ninth, but both were stranded as McCarthy went the distance.
Offensively, the Pirates broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third. Chris Chiaradio (Teaneck, N.J.) led off with a single. With one out, Derek Jenkins (Annandale, N.J.) reached on a bunt single and advanced Chiaradio to second. With Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) at the plate, UConn starter Anthony Kay threw high of second base on a failed pickoff attempt and both Seton Hall runners moved into scoring position. Weigel followed with a single up the middle to drive in both runners and give The Hall a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Joe Poduslenko (Glen Mills, Pa.) beat out the throw on a bunt single and advanced to second when the UConn third baseman's throw sailed wide of first base. A wild pitch moved Poduslenko to third, and a groundout by Jenkins scored him to extend the Pirates' advantage to 3-0.
Weigel and Chiaradio were the lone Pirates to reach base twice.
