TAMPA, FLA. - Sophomore Zach Prendergast (Horsham, Pa.) pitched 7.1 innings of one-run baseball, but it wasn't enough as Seton Hall fell at USF, 1-0, on Friday.
The game was billed a pitchers' duel and didn't disappoint. Prendergast gave up just one run on a balk in the second inning. He struck out four batters and walked two. Meanwhile, USF starter Jimmy Herget pitched eight scoreless innings, gave up just two hits and struck out 12 batters for the victory.
Seton Hall had a ripe opportunity right at the start of the game. Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) was hit by a pitch to lead off the game. With one out, Kyle Grimm (Bergenfield, N.J.) singled hard to left field, which advanced Weigel to second. But both Sal Annunziata (Bronx, N.Y.) and Mike Caputo (Morganville, N.J.) struck out to end the threat.
USF got on the scoreboard with a run in the bottom of the second inning. Prendergast gave up back-to-back singles to lead off the inning and eventually loaded the bases with a walk with one out. A balk forced in the run, but Prendergast was able to avoid further damage.
After the second, both pitchers settled in. Prendergast gave up just four hits and no runs over the next 5.1 innings, while Herget allowed only two Pirates to reach base over the next six innings.
Tyler Boyd (Succasunna, N.J.) doubled with two outs in the fourth inning, but he was ultimately stranded and it was the last time The Hall put a runner in scoring position.
Seton Hall will return to action tomorrow for the second game of this three-game series at the University of South Florida. Game time is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
