TAMPA, FLA. - The Seton Hall baseball team had trouble offensively again and fell at USF, 7-3, on Saturday.
The Pirates mustered only three hits over the first eight innings and couldn't support starter Shane McCarthy (Fair Haven, N.J.), who was making his first collegiate start. The freshman pitched 4.2 innings and gave up two runs, both unearned, while striking out two and walking one.
After being shut out on Friday, Seton Hall only needed three batters to plate its first run on Saturday. Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) walked to lead off the game. On his stolen base attempt the USF catcher threw high of second base, which allowed Weigel to advance to third. With one out, Kyle Grimm (Bergenfield, N.J.) drove in Weigel with a ground out to short to give the Pirates an early 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, USF struck back with a pair of unearned runs aided by two Seton Hall errors. McCarthy gave up a one-out double to the Bulls' Buddy Putnam. With two outs, USF's Kevin Merrell hit a weak grounder between first and second that should have ended the inning, but Sal Annunziata (Bronx, N.Y.) and Chris Chiaradio (Teaneck, N.J.) collided, and the error allowed Merrell to reach safely and advanced Putnam to third. USF's Kyle Teaf followed with a single to left field, which scored Putnam, and when Weigel threw wide of third, Merrell scored with the go-ahead run.
The Seton Hall bullpen had been rolling along since McCarthy left with two outs in the fifth inning, until the bottom of the eighth. Ryan Testani (Shelton, Conn.) hit two of the first three batters he faced before being lifted in favor of Anthony Pacillo (Lyndhurst, N.J.). Pacillo got the second out on a fly ball, but then surrendered a three-run home run to USF's Austin Lueck, which broke the game open. Three straight singles followed and plated two more USF runs as the Bulls put up a five-spot in the bottom of the eighth to take a commanding 7-1 lead.
In the ninth, the Pirates got two runs back, but the offense proved to be too little, too late. Pinch hitter Matt Fortin (Nassua, N.H.) walked with one out, and came home on the ensuing RBI double by Alex Falconi (Freeport, N.Y.). Mikael-Ali Mogues (New York, N.Y.) followed with an RBI single to right, which cut the Bulls' lead to 7-3, but the Pirates couldn't get closer.
Grimm had two of the Pirates three hits and finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Seton Hall will return to action tomorrow for the finale of this three-game series at the University of South Florida. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
