STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Sophomore Joe Poduslenko (Glen Mills, Pa.) went 3-for-4, but it wasn't enough as the Seton Hall baseball team fell at St. John's, 5-1, on Friday to snap its nine-game win streak.
Seton Hall (16-11, 3-1) got a run courtesy of the first batter of the game, but then was shut down over the next eight innings as St. John's starter Cody Stashak and relievers Matt Clancy and Joe Kuzia combined to allow only four additional hits.
Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) started the game with a bang. In the top of the first, the junior sent a high-arching ball off the top of the right-field wall for a triple. When the St. John's right fielder bobbled the ball, Weigel broke for the plate and scored the first run of the game.
The Pirates' lead didn't last long however, as St. John's greeted Seton Hall starter Zach Prendergast (Horsham, Pa.) rudely in the bottom of the first. Back-to-back singles to lead off the inning put Red Storm runners on the corners with no outs. A fielder's choice drove in the tying run, but Prendergast did a fine job of limiting the damage to just one run.
St. John's (17-11, 4-0) offense continued to click in innings two and three, posting single runs in both to take a 3-1 lead.
The Hall appeared poised to get a run back in the top of the fifth inning. With one out, Poduslenko singled hard off the back of Stashak, and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches. But alas, he was stranded there.
Tyler Sanchez led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a solo home run to give St. John's a 4-1 lead and chase Prendergast from the game.
Prendergast took the loss with three earned runs in four innings to fall to 4-3 on the season.
The Red Storm tacked on another run off reliever Anthony Elia (Flanders, N.J.) in the seventh inning. Despite the lone run, Elia pitched very well. The senior threw four innings, allowing just four hits with four strikeouts and only one walk. All three of Seton Hall's fielding errors came on Elia's watch too, and the left-hander did a good job of limiting damage.
Seton Hall will resume this three-game series with St. John's tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
