SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- Freshman Shane McCarthy (Fair Haven, N.J.) pitched eight innings and gave up only one run, but took the loss as the Seton Hall baseball team fell to Butler in a pitchers' duel, 1-0, on Saturday.
McCarthy was rolling and had a low pitch count, but ran into trouble immediately in the top of the ninth inning. Butler pinch hitter Nick Bartolone led off the inning with a triple and Chris Maranto followed with a single up the middle to score Bartolone with the only run of the game. With runners on first and second and no outs, McCarthy was lifted in favor of Joe DiBenedetto (Staten Island, N.Y.). The left-hander did a fine job of stranding the runners, but the damage had been done.
Seton Hall (18-14, 5-3) got the tying run in scoring position with two outs via a single by Alex Falconi (Freeport, N.Y.) and a Butler error, but Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.) struck out to end the game.
McCarthy falls to 4-3 with the hard-luck loss.
The Pirates had their best run opportunity in the bottom of the eighth inning. With one out, Derek Jenkins (Annandale, N.J.) singled through the left side and moved to second on a single by Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.). With two outs, D.J. Ruhlman (Belle Mead, N.J.) walked to load the bases. But Kyle Grimm (Bergenfield, N.J.) grounded into a fielder's choice to end the threat.
In all, Seton Hall left 11 men on base.
Butler's Peter Nyznyk pitched eight scoreless innings for the victory.
Seton Hall will return to action tomorrow for the rubber game of its three-game series with Butler. First pitch is scheduled for Noon.
