SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- The Seton Hall baseball team fell to Georgetown, 5-2, in the second game of a Friday double-header to complete the 2015 regular season, but clinched a berth in the upcoming BIG EAST Tournament.
With Seton Hall's victory in game one of today's double-header, and Butler's 16-2 loss at Xavier, the Pirates earned a berth to the conference championship tournament for a fifth consecutive season.
Georgetown struck for three runs in the top of the third inning of Seton Hall starter Matt Leon (Bethlehem, Pa.) to take a 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the third, the Pirates had a golden opportunity for a big inning, but settled for only one run to cut the lead to 3-1. Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.) singled to lead off the inning. Chris Chiaradio (Teaneck, N.J.) walked, and Derek Jenkins (Annandale, N.J) reached on an infield single to load the bases with no outs. But Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) popped up and Joe Poduslenko (Glen Mills, Pa.) struck out. It took a throwing error by the Georgetown third baseman on a grounder by Mike Caputo (Morganville, N.J.) to push across a run. Sal Annunziata (Bronx, N.Y.) grounded out to end the Pirates' threat.
With the score 5-1, Seton Hall tried to stir up the same bottom of the ninth magic it cooked up in game one, but fell short. Annunziata led off with a triple to right center. With one out Alex Falconi (Freeport, N.Y.) flew out to right field, and Annunziata tagged and scored, but the Pirates couldn't muster any more theatrics.
Leon took the loss after giving up three earned runs in four innings. Five Pirate relievers combined to allow the other two Hoya runs.
Seton Hall has earned the #3 seed in the BIG EAST Championship and will play #2 seed Creighton on Thursday, May 21 in Omaha, Neb. Top-seeded St. John's will face #4 Georgetown on the same day to open the double-elimination tournament.
