OMAHA, NEB. -- The Seton Hall baseball team held a 4-2 lead, but Creighton struck for four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally past the Pirates, 7-4, in the first round of the 2015 BIG EAST Championship on Thursday.
Leading 4-2 in the seventh inning, the Pirates' command failed them. After a strong six innings, Seton Hall starter Shane McCarthy (Fair Haven, N.J.) began the inning with his fourth hit-batsmen of the game and a subsequent walk. Joe DiBenedetto (Staten Island, N.Y.) entered the game in relief, but proceeded to walk the next two batters, the second of which forced in a run. After recording a strikeout, Creighton's Ryan Fitzgerald hit a two-RBI double to reclaim the lead for Creighton, 5-4. A sacrifice fly plated a sixth run for the Bluejays off Sam Burum (Robbinsville, N.J.).
McCarthy pitched well despite a mediocre final line. The freshman went six innings and surrendered just four hits and three earned runs in a no decision.
Junior Chris Chiaradio (Teaneck, N.J.) and Derek Jenkins (Annandale, N.J.) each had a pair of hits for The Hall. Chiaradio went 2-for-3 with a double, triple and sacrifice fly. Jenkins went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and his BIG EAST leading 26th stolen base of the season.
Creighton got on the scoreboard first with single runs in the first and fourth innings off McCarthy to take a 2-0 lead.
Seton Hall (24-24) came back with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning. Alex Falconi (Freeport, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.) hit a fly ball to right field, which was misplayed by Creighton right-fielder Brett Murray and Ramiz made it to second on the error. Chiaradio delivered a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Falconi with the Pirates' first run and cutting the Bluejays' lead in half. Jenkins followed with his first of two RBI singles up the middle to tie the game at two runs apiece.
With McCarthy rolling, The Hall took the lead with two more runs in the top of the seventh. After a lengthy at bat, Falconi led off the inning with a double to left field and advanced to third on a passed ball. It appeared as though Creighton starter Matt Warren was going to get out of the inning after inducing a pair of pop outs, holding Falconi at third base, but Jenkins delivered a two out single. Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) followed with a double down the right field line, which scored Jenkins from first to put the Pirates in front, 4-2.
The Seton Hall lead however, didn't last long as Creighton struck for four runs in the bottom of the seventh.
With the loss Seton Hall is now placed in the loser's bracket of the tournament. The Pirates will face Georgetown on Friday at 4:30 p.m. ET in an elimination game. The loser of that game will see its season come to an end. The fourth-seeded Hoyas lost to top-seeded St. John's, 2-1, earlier in the day on Thursday.
