SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- The Seton Hall baseball team scored four runs with two outs and the bases empty in the bottom of the ninth inning to edge Georgetown, 6-5, in game one of Friday's double-header.
Seton Hall (24-22, 9-8), desperately needing a win to keep their BIG EAST Tournament hopes alive, registered their second-straight walk-off victory with a single by Chris Chiaradio (Teaneck, N.J.) that broke a 5-5 tie.
With two outs and trailing 5-2, Sal Annunziata (Bronx, N.Y.) worked the count full and drew a walk. Tyler Boyd (Succasunna, N.J.) followed with a double to left-center, which scored Annunziata to cut the Hoya lead to 5-3. Alex Falconi (Freeport, N.Y.) singled to center field, scoring Boyd, and advanced to second on the throw. After Georgetown made a pitching change, Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.) beat out an infield single, but a throwing error by Georgetown reliever David Ellingson, allowed pinch runner Jackson Martin (Collegeville, Pa.) to score with the tying run. It also allowed the winning run, Ramiz, to move into scoring position. On a 2-0 count, Chiaradio delivered a hard single up the middle, which scored Ramiz and made the Pirates winners in miraculous walk-off fashion.
Georgetown (24-26, 7-10) got on the board first, scoring single runs in both the first and second innings off Seton Hall starter Anthony Elia (Flanders, N.J.). But after the rough start, Elia settled down and turned in a strong performance. The senior tossed 6.2 innings and gave up just two earned runs in a no decision.
In the bottom of the fourth, Seton Hall got a run back. Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) reached on a throwing error by Georgetown's third baseman to start the inning. He then stole second and came in to score on an RBI single to left field by Kyle Grimm (Bergenfield, N.J.), which cut the Hoya lead to 2-1.
Seton Hall tied the game at two in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Pirates had runners on second and third with just one out, but could only muster one run on an RBI ground out by Grimm.
The Hoyas struck for single runs in each of the seventh, eighth and ninth innings to take a sizeable 5-2 lead into the ninth inning, but that's when Seton Hall's theatrics began.
Luke Cahill (Tinton Falls, N.J.) picked up the victory as the last of five Seton Hall pitchers in game one.
Chiaradio was the lone Pirate with two hits. Grimm was the only Pirate with two RBIs.
