PLYMOUTH MEETING, PA. -- The Seton Hall baseball team led by three runs early, but Villanova rallied to defeat the Pirates, 7-5, in the first game of their three-game weekend series on Friday.
The Seton Hall offense pounded out nine hits and the Pirates led 4-1 mid-way through the third inning, but the Wildcats scored four times in the bottom of the third and The Hall never led again.
Three Pirates collected two hits. Joe Poduslenko (Glen Mills, Pa.) went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Sal Annunziata (Bronx, N.Y.) continued his late season resurgence and went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Chris Chiaradio (Teaneck, N.J.) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Villanova (20-24, 6-7) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but Seton Hall scored three times in the top of the second inning. Annunziata led off with a double to left field. Tyler Boyd (Succasunna, N.J.) walked and both runners were sacrificed into scoring position by Alex Falconi (Freeport, N.Y.). Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.) struck out, but scrambled to first as the third strike was a wild pitch. Annunziata scored on the play and Boyd advanced to third. After Chiaradio reached on a fielder's choice, Derek Jenkins (Annandale, N.J.) delivered a two-RBI single up the middle to give The Hall a 3-1 lead.
Seton Hall (21-21, 6-7) tacked on another run two batters into the top of the third. Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) led off with a triple down the right-field line and Poduslenko followed with an RBI single to right.
Villanova however, struck for four runs off Seton Hall starting pitcher Anthony Pacillo (Lyndhurst, N.J.) in the bottom of the third and never looked back. Pacillo took the loss to fall to 3-3 and gave up five earned runs in only 2.2 innings of work.
Matt Leon (Bethlehem, Pa.) came on in relief of Pacillo in the third and pitched very well. The freshman tossed 4.2 innings and gave up just four hits and two runs.
The Pirates got a run back in the top of the fifth on an RBI double by Poduslenko, but that was all the offense Seton Hall mustered on Friday.
With his two hits today, Sal Annunziata passed Brian Leighton for sixth place on Seton Hall's career hits list.
Seton Hall will return to action tomorrow as its three-game series at Villanova continues. The teams will play a double-header with the first pitch of the first game scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
