Pirates Compete at ITA Regional Championship

New Haven, Conn. - The Seton Hall women's tennis team wrapped up the fall portion of its season with four student-athletes competing at the 2016 ITA Regional Championship, hosted by Yale University.
Junior Luize Strike (Riga, Latvia) earned a first-round bye in the 96-woman field and then defeated Syracuse's Dina Hegab in straight sets to advance to the third round and be among the final 32 student-athletes. She fell short of the round of 16, winning the first set against Columbia's Ali Pollack, but dropping sets two and three.
Sophomore Anna Fajnorova (Bratislava, Slovakia) had to qualify for the main draw and did so by securing two victories during the tournament's first day. She knocked off Fordham's Mayu Sato in straight sets and then shortly thereafter took down Connecticut's Summer Walker to earn her spot in the 96-woman field. She fell short of advancing, dropping a first-round contest to Rutgers' Jacqueline Cochrane.
In doubles, Strike and Fajnorova won their first round match to make it to the final 32. They topped Fairfield's Sarah Stuhlman and Diana Prinos before bowing out to Harvard's June Lee and Eric Oosterhout in a very competitive match that could have easily gone to the Pirates.
Junior Katie Kim (Honolulu, Hawaii) and sophomore Thandy Kangwa (Fort Myers, Fla.) also competed for The Hall, losing a first-round doubles match to Madison Battaglia and Valerie Shklover of Yale.
The Pirates will be training the rest of the winter in preparation for their championship season, which kicks off Jan. 21-22 at NJIT.
