MIAMI, FLA. - Florida International tagged Seton Hall pitchers for nine runs and 13 hits over the first four innings as the Pirates fell to the Panthers, 10-1, in baseball action on Sunday.
Seton Hall (2-5) had its share of offensive opportunities, particularly early on. The Pirates left 10 men on base through the first six innings, five of which were left in scoring position.
Trailing 5-0, the Pirates offense broke through in the top of the third inning. Back-to-back walks to lead off the inning by Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) and Joe Poduslenko (Glen Mills, Pa.) put a runner in scoring position with no outs. After a fielder's choice moved Weigel to third, he scored on a throwing error by FIU's third baseman to cut the Panther lead to 5-1.
Turning Point:
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the first three Panthers reached base via back-to-back singles and an error to load the bases with no outs against Pirate reliever Matt Leon (Bethlehem, Pa.). After a sacrifice fly plated FIU's sixth run, doubles by Kenny Meimerstorf and Zach Files broke the game open and extended the Panther lead to 9-1.
Inside the Numbers:
- Junior Matt Fortin (Nashua, N.H.) was the lone Pirate with multiple hits. He went 2-for-3 with a double.
- Freshman right-hander Matt Ardente (Galloway, N.J.) made his collegiate debut and pitched a perfect eighth inning, while striking out two of the three batters he faced.
- Freshman Liam McArthur (Basking Ridge, N.J.) made his collegiate debut with a start in centerfield. He also recorded his first hit, a single to left field in the sixth inning.
- Seton Hall starter Zach Prendergast (Horsham, Pa.) took the loss. He went 1.1 innings and allowed five runs on five hits.
- Seton Hall left 10 men on base, while FIU left eight.

Seton Hall will complete its four-game series with Florida International on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
