MIAMI, FLA. -- The Seton Hall baseball team collected nine hits, but it wasn't enough as it dropped its second straight game at Florida International, 5-1, on Saturday.
Seton Hall (2-4) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by Joe Poduslenko (Glen Mills, Pa.), but the advantage didn't last long as the Panthers tied the score with a single run in the bottom of the inning.
Turning Point:
After the first inning, both starting pitchers were allowing runners, but routinely were able to prevent them from scoring. In the bottom of the fourth inning however, FIU's Kenny Meimerstorf led off with a triple, and with one out, scored the go-ahead run on a throwing error by Zach Schellenger (Malvern, Pa.).
From there, the Panthers scored single runs in the next three innings to pad their lead.
Inside the Numbers:
- Poduslenko was one of three Pirates to collect two hits. Derek Jenkins (Annandale, N.J.) and Chris Chiaradio (Teaneck, N.J.) also had a pair of singles.
- Schellenger fell to 0-2 with the loss. He gave up five hits and three earned runs over 4.0 innings, while striking out two and walking three batters.
- Andrew Politi (Long Valley, N.J.) pitched three innings in relief and surrendered two earned runs, while striking out three batters and walking one.
- Junior Anthony Pacillo (Lyndhurst, N.J.) retired all three batters he faced, while striking out two.
- The leadoff batter for FIU reached base in each of the first six innings, while Seton Hall's leadoff batter reached base only once.
- Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.) threw a runner out at the plate to end the third inning.
- Both teams left 10 men on base.
News & Notes:
- With a steal tonight, Jenkins now has 75 for his career, which passes former Pirates Mike Feoli and Chris Walrath for 10th on Seton Hall's all-time list.
- With the loss, Seton Hall drops to 10-18 all-time against Florida International.
Up Next:
Seton Hall will continue its four-game series with Florida International tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
