SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- Junior Zach Prendergast (Horsham, Pa.) allowed just one run over seven innings as the Seton Hall baseball team defeated Lafayette, 5-1, on Wednesday.
The victory is the Pirates' sixth straight and improves their record 10-6.
The Pirates scored a single run in each of the first five innings, before lightening was detected and the game was halted for 57 minutes. Three relievers came on after the delay and shut down Lafayette the rest of the way.
Turning Point:
With the game tied at one, Seton Hall took the lead for good in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, Mike Caputo (Morganville, N.J.) singled. Senior Chris Chiaradio (Teaneck, N.J.) followed with an RBI triple to score Caputo with the go-ahead run.
Inside the Numbers:
- Prendergast improves to 3-2 with seven innings of one-run baseball. He also struck out five batters and didn't issue a walk.
- Junior Mikael-Ali Mogues (New York, N.Y.) reached base a team-high three times, going 2-for-3 with a hit-by-pitch, a run scored and an RBI.
- Mogues and Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) had two hits apiece.
- Seton Hall struck out five batters in the eighth inning. Sophomore Andrew Politi (Long Valley, N.J.) struck out four in only two-thirds of an inning. An error and a wild pitch allowed two Leopards to reach base after striking out.
- Both Seton Hall and Lafayette left seven men on base.
News & Notes:
- After a 2-5 start, Seton Hall has now won eight of its last nine games.
- With a steal tonight, senior Derek Jenkins (Annandale, N.J.) now has 82 for his career and need just two more to pass Joe Cuervo for ninth on the Pirates' all-time list.
- With the victory, head coach Rob Sheppard needs just 12 more victories to pass Owen T. Carroll for second on Seton Hall's career wins list.
- Seton Hall has now won its last 13 games against Lafayette and improves to 24-2 all-time in the series.
Up Next:
Seton Hall will return to action on Friday, March 18 as it hosts Manhattan in the first game of a three-game series at Owen T. Carroll Field. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
