SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Sophomore Shane McCarthy (Fair Haven, N.J.) tossed a complete-game shutout as the Seton Hall baseball team blanked Manhattan, 2-0, on Friday for its seventh straight win.
McCarthy was masterful, scattering just two hits, while striking out a career-high 11 batters with no walks. The right-hander pitched to just two batters over the minimum and improved to 2-2 on the season.
Turning Point:
Seton Hall (11-6) scored all the runs it need in the bottom of the third inning. In a scoreless game, Mike Caputo (Morganville, N.J.) led off with a single. Senior Chris Chiaradio (Teaneck, N.J.) followed with a sacrifice bunt to advance Caputo to second. With two outs, senior Derek Jenkins (Annandale, N.J.) singled up the middle to score Caputo with the first run of the game.
Inside the Numbers:
- Caputo and Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) led the Pirates with two hits apiece.
- McCarthy struck out the side in both the first and fourth innings.
- Seton Hall left six men on base, while Manhattan left two.
News & Notes:
- After a 2-5 start, Seton Hall has now won nine of its last 10 games.
- McCarthy's gem is the second complete-game shutout of his career. He has now struck out 21 batters over his last two starts.
- The 2-0 victory is the first shutout this season recorded by the Pirates.
- Weigel tripled in the fourth inning. It's his 11th career triple, which ties him for sixth-most in Seton Hall history.
- With the victory, head coach Rob Sheppard needs just 11 more victories to pass Owen T. Carroll for second on Seton Hall's career wins list.
- With the win, Seton Hall improves to 21-5 all-time against the Jaspers and has won five straight.
