SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Seton Hall pitchers Cullen Dana (Montgomery, N.Y.) and Matt Leon (Bethlehem, Pa.) combined to limit Manhattan to just three hits as the Pirates shut out the Jaspers for a second straight game, 5-0, in game one of Saturday's double-header.
Dana allowed just three hits over five innings with five strikeouts and two walks to improve to 3-0 on the season. Leon pitched to just one batter over the minimum and didn't allow a hit in four strong innings of relief to earn the save. He struck out four batters without a walk.
Turning Point:
With the game locked in a scoreless tie, the Pirates finally broke through offensively in the bottom of the fourth inning. Junior Joe Poduslenko (Glen Mills, Pa.) led off with a walk. With one out, Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) singled through the right side, advancing Poduslenko to second base. Mike Alescio (Fair Haven, N.J.) followed with a grounder to first, but the Jasper first baseman erred and Poduslenko came around to score the game's first run. Mike Caputo (Morganville, N.J.) then reached on a bunt single to first base, which scored Weigel to extend the Pirate lead to 2-0.
Inside the Numbers:
- Seton Hall scored three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Chris Chiaradio (Teaneck, N.J.), Brett Fontenelli (Toms River, N.J.) and Derek Jenkins (Annandale, N.J.) all drove in runs.
- Caputo led the Pirates with three hits.
- Weigel, Caputo and Poduslenko all reached base three times for Seton Hall.
- Leon earned his second save of the season to lead the Pirates.
- Seton Hall left 10 men on base, while Manhattan left six.

- The 5-0 victory is the second shutout this season recorded by the Pirates and second in 24 hours.
- With the victory, head coach Rob Sheppard needs just 10 more victories to pass Owen T. Carroll for second on Seton Hall's career wins list.
