SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall baseball team scored five runs over the first two innings and were able to hold off Iona, 5-4, on Wednesday.
Seton Hall (17-7) scored three times in the top of the first inning, despite only having one hit. The Pirates took advantage of three walks by Iona starter Patrick Ryan and wreaked havoc on the base paths to the tune of five stolen bases in the opening frame alone.
Turning Point:
The Pirates were able to extend their lead to 5-0 on a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning. After walks to Chris Villa (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.), senior Derek Jenkins (Annandale, N.J.) delivered a two-RBI double to left-center field.
Inside the Numbers:
- Freshman Matt Ardente (Galloway, N.J.) made the start and pitched three strong innings. He gave up just one hit and struck out five batters, while walking only one.
- Sophomore Zach Schellenger (Malvern, Pa.) tossed the final 2.1 scoreless innings to earn his first save of the season.
- Seton Hall used five pitchers in all.
- Jenkins and Mikael-Ali Mogues (New York, N.Y.) both reached base three times.
- The Pirates were walked a season-high 10 times.
- Jenkins and Mike Caputo (Morganville, N.J.) led Seton Hall with two hits apiece.
- Seton Hall left nine men on base, while Iona left 10.
News & Notes:
- Jenkins entered today's game as the national leader with 1.10 steals per game.
- Jenkins now has 94 career steals, which ranks fifth on Seton Hall's career list. Seton Hall great Marteese Robinson is fourth on the list with 103.
- After a 2-5 start, Seton Hall has now won 15 of its last 17 games.
- With the victory, head coach Rob Sheppard needs just five more victories to pass Owen T. Carroll for second on Seton Hall's career wins list.
- Seton Hall has now won 10 straight against the Gaels, improving to 31-4 all-time in the series.
Up Next:
Seton Hall will return to action tomorrow when it makes the short trip to Princeton, N.J. to take on the Tigers. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
