PRINCETON, N.J. - The Seton Hall baseball team took a 3-1 lead into the fifth inning, but Princeton rallied with a pair of runs in each of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to defeat the Pirates, 7-4, on Wednesday.
The Pirates had several opportunities to pile on runs early, but left seven runners on base through the first four innings. After the fourth inning, the Princeton bullpen allowed only three Seton Hall batters to reach base.
Turning Point:
Junior starting pitcher Zach Prendergast (Horsham, Pa.) was rolling through the first four innings, having given up just one run on one hit. But in the bottom of the fifth inning, he gave up a one-out double, followed by a two-run home run to Princeton's Danny Baer, which tied the score at three. The right-hander wasn't the same afterward, surrendering two more runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Inside the Numbers:
- Senior Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) reached base a team-high three times, and was the only Pirate with two hits.
- Senior Derek Jenkins (Annandale, N.J.) stole two more bases, giving him a national-best 26 for the season.
- Prendergast falls to 3-3 with the loss. He gave up five earned runs over 5.2 innings with four strikeouts and one walk.
- Chris Morris (Matawan, N.J.) struck out the side in his only inning of work.
- Senior Chris Chiaradio (Teaneck, N.J.) belted his third triple of the season.
- Seton Hall left nine men on base, while Princeton left seven.
News & Notes:
- Junior Nelson Valerio (Wharton, N.J.) started as the Pirates' designated hitter and recorded his first career at bat, walk and RBI in the game.
- Jenkins now has 96 career steals, which ranks fifth on Seton Hall's career list. Seton Hall great Marteese Robinson is fourth on the list with 103.
- Seton Hall drops to 28-9-1 all-time in the series vs. Princeton.
Up Next:
Seton Hall will return to action on Friday, April 1 for the first game of a three-game series against Quinnipiac at Owen T. Carroll Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
