OMAHA, NEB. - Junior Zach Prendergast (Horsham, Pa.) pitched seven innings and allowed only two runs as the Seton Hall baseball team held off Creighton, 5-4, on Sunday for its first BIG EAST Conference win of the year.
Creighton's Matt Gandy led off the bottom of the third inning with a solo home run over the right field fence to give the Bluejays an early 1-0 lead. The lead didn't last long, however. Junior Derek Jenkins (Annandale, N.J.) drew a one-out walk in the top of the fourth. After stealing second base, he came into score the tying run on an RBI single by Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.).
In the bottom of the inning however, Creighton's Nicky Lopez led off with a triple over Jenkins' head in centerfield. Reagan Fowler followed with a sacrifice fly to right field, which easily scored Lopez with the go-ahead run, 2-1.
Turning Point:
Seton Hall (22-10, 1-2) finally put together its first big inning of the series in the top of the fifth. Both Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.) and Mikael-Ali Mogues (New York, N.Y.) walked to get the inning started, which chased Creighton starter Keith Rogalla from the game. Then the Bluejays defense let them down. Junior Mike Caputo (Morganville, N.J.) reached to load the bases on a throwing error by Creighton reliever Ethan DeCaster. After a balk forced in Caputo, Joe Poduslenko (Glen Mills, Pa.) reached on a fielding error by third baseman Harrison Crawford, which allowed Mogues to score with the go-ahead run. Sophomore Mike Alescio (Fair Haven, N.J.) followed with an RBI double off the wall in left field. Chris Chiaradio (Teaneck, N.J.) drove in the fourth and final run of the inning with an RBI ground out. Once the dust settled, the Pirates had a 5-2 lead with four runs on just one hit in the inning.
Inside the Numbers:
- Prendergast improved to 4-3 on the season with seven innings of two-run baseball. He struck out seven batters and didn't issue a walk.

- Both Seton Hall and Creighton left three men on base.
