OMAHA, NEB. - The Seton Hall baseball team mustered just three hits off Creighton starter Jeff Albrecht and fell, 7-1, on Saturday in Omaha.
Seton Hall (21-10, 0-2) threatened with two on base and one out in the top of the second inning, but the Bluejay lefty was able to record a strikeout and line-out to keep the Pirates off the scoreboard. After that, Albrecht retired eight straight batters before his no-hitter was finally broken up by Mike Caputo (Morganville, N.J.) leading off the fifth inning.
Turning Point:
Seton Hall starter Cullen Dana (Montgomery, N.Y.) was nearly equally as impressive as Albrecht until the fourth inning when control issues and some questionable defense hurt the Pirates. The inning began with a walk to Ryan Fitzgerald. Nicky Lopez followed with a single through the left side, Fitzgerald, attempting to go from first to third, drew a wide throw from Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) in left field, and came in to score the first run of the game on the error. An injury to the home plate umpire on the play caused an eight minute delay. When the game resumed, Dana hit Reagan Fowler with the first pitch. After a strikeout, a sacrifice fly plated the Bluejays' second run and an RBI double by Bryce Only put the Pirates in a 3-0 hole.
Inside the Numbers:
- Dana took his first loss with four innings pitched, six runs, five strikeouts and three walks.
- Caputo, Weigel and Matt Fortin (Nashua, N.H.) each reached base twice.
- Sophomore Andrew Politi (Long Valley, N.J.) tossed two scoreless innings in relief.
- Freshman Matt Ardente (Galloway, N.J.) pitched a scoreless eighth inning.
- Seton Hall left five men on base, while Creighton left six.
News & Notes:
- With a steal today, senior Derek Jenkins (Annandale, N.J.) now has 101 career steals, which ranks fifth on Seton Hall's career list.
- Seton Hall great Marteese Robinson is fourth on the list with 103. Seton Hall falls to 2-9 all-time against the Bluejays.
Up Next:
Seton Hall will return to action tomorrow as it concludes its three-game series at Creighton. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET.
