INDIANAPOLIS, IND. -- Freshman Cullen Dana (Montgomery, N.Y.) tossed eight strong innings as the Seton Hall baseball team defeated Butler, 5-2, on Saturday, to complete a three-game sweep of the Bulldogs and finish the 2016 regular season on a five-game win streak.
Seton Hall (38-18, 10-8) has earned the No. 3 seed in next week's BIG EAST Tournament, held at Leidos Field at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen, Md. The Pirates will face No. 2 seed Creighton on Thursday. Xavier has earned the No. 1 seed and will face No. 4 St. John's also on May 26.
Trailing 2-0, the Pirates got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning. With two outs, Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.) drew a walk. Senior Chris Chiaradio (Teaneck, N.J.) followed with an RBI double to left field to cut the Bulldog lead in half.
In the top of the eighth inning, the Pirates tied the game. After Chiaradio singled to lead off the inning, Rob Dadona (Staten Island, N.Y.) pinch ran, stole second base and advanced to third on a throwing error by the Butler catcher. Junior Jackson Martin (Collegeville, Pa.) followed with a single through the right side to score Dadona with the tying run.
Turning Point:
With the score tied at two, the Pirates offense erupted for three runs in the top of the ninth inning.
Junior Joe Poduslenko (Glen Mills, Pa.) led off with a walk. Sophomore Mike Alescio (Fair Haven, N.J.) reached on a bunt single and Poduslenko advanced to third on a throwing error by the Bulldog catcher. After Mikael-Ali Mogues (New York, N.Y.) walked, Mike Caputo (Morganville, N.J.) drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly. Ramiz followed with an infield single, which scored Alescio. Dadona then singled to center field, scoring Mogues and the Pirates led 5-2.
Inside the Numbers:
- Dana improved to 7-2 with the victory after throwing eight innings with just two earned runs, five strikeouts and two walks.
- Sophomore Chris Morris (Matawan, N.J.) got the final out of the ninth inning for his second save of the season.
- Chiaradio reached base a team-high three times, going 2-for-3 with a walk, a double and an RBI.
- Alescio went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base.
- Ramiz reached base three times, going 1-for-2 with two walks, a run scored and an RBI.
- Seton Hall left six men on base, while Butler left eight.
News & Notes:
- This is the 22nd time Seton Hall has clinched a berth in the BIG EAST Tournament, second-most in BIG EAST history.
- It is the fifth time in the last six seasons that Seton Hall has won its final regular season series.
- Seton Hall improves to 5-4 all-time against Butler.

Seton Hall will return to action on Thursday, May 26 when it begins play at the 2016 BIG EAST Tournament. The third-seeded Pirates will face No. 2 seed Creighton at Leidos Field at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen, Md. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET.
