ABERDEEN, MD. - Sophomore Shane McCarthy (Fair Haven, N.J.) tossed eight strong innings for the Seton Hall baseball team, but Creighton scored three times in the bottom of the ninth inning, due in part to three errors, to win, 6-5, in the first round of the BIG EAST Championship on Thursday.
With the loss, the Pirates will face No. 4 St. John's on Friday in an elimination game. The loser's season will come to an end. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
Seton Hall (38-19) wasted little time getting on the scoreboard against Creighton starter Rollie Lacy. Senior Chris Chiaradio (Teaneck, N.J.) led off the game with a double to left field. With one out, Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) delivered an RBI single through the left side to give The Hall a 1-0 lead. With two outs, Mike Alescio (Fair Haven, N.J.) drove the Pirates' third hit of the inning into center field to extend the lead to 2-0.
Leading 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth, McCarthy was the victim of four infield hits by Creighton and a Pirate error, which led to a pair of runs to tie the game at three.
In the top of the sixth, the first four Pirates reached base to begin the inning, the fourth of which was a hit-by-pitch by Lacy on Alescio with the bases loaded to force in the go-ahead run. Mikael-Ali Mogues (New York, N.Y.) then grounded into a double-play, but Matt Fortin (Nashua, N.H.) scored to give the Pirates a 5-3 lead.
Turning Point:
In the bottom of the ninth, Zach Schellenger (Malvern, Pa.) came on in relief of McCarthy. After walking the leadoff batter, he struck out the next batter for the first out of the inning. Schellenger induced a ground ball by Creighton's Brennan Hammer, but Chiaradio couldn't field it cleanly, and the tying runs were on base. Daniel Woodrow followed with a bloop single to left field, which should have only scored one run, but Weigel's throw hit the runner at the plate and ricocheted wide of Fortin, which allowed Hammer to take third, and Schellenger, who was backing up the play at home, also threw wide of Fortin, which enabled Hammer to come in and score the tying run. With the winning run just 90 feet away for Creighton, the Pirates decided to intentionally walk Nicky Lopez, but Schellenger threw a wild pitch on the second ball, and Woodrow scored the winning run.
