SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- Following a 2015 campaign that featured a combined total of 20 freshmen and sophomores on the roster, the Seton Hall men's soccer program opens its 78th season on Friday at Saint Peter's a year older. Combined with more experience and new additions to the team, there is a mindset that a turnaround can become a reality this fall at The Hall.
Entering his fifth season at the helm, head coach Gerson Echeverry welcomes back 15 players who saw time last fall, in particular a back line that is a big part of the leadership of the team.
Captain Shawn Morrison (York, Pa.) has made an impact for the Pirates ever since his freshman year in 2013, and now the senior takes the reigns as one of the leaders of the program along with senior goalkeeper Julian Spindler (Weiserbach, Germany). Morrison has made a total of 31 starts for The Hall and has been known for his scrappy style of play, while Spindler is among the program's all-time leaders with nine career clean sheets. On top of the veteran presence that he gives the Pirates, junior John Philbin (Emmaus, Pa.) will offer durability after he led the team with 1,382 minutes of action last season. Philbin has been one of the most consistent players for Echeverry, having played the full 90 minutes in 14 fixtures last fall. A consistent sophomore season followed up his freshman campaign in 2014, when he was tabbed to the All-BIG EAST Rookie Team.
Joining Morrison and Philbin is another defensive standout in junior Lukas Pangonis (Kaunas, Lithuania). The Lithuania native has also established himself as a talent that Echeverry can continually rely on to log minutes. Pangonis has made 27 starts in his first two seasons and came on in his sophomore year in the final month of the season with assists against Princeton and nationally-ranked Georgetown.
While those three will anchor The Hall's defense in front of Spindler, the Pirates have a deep group of midfielders that will look to create this fall. Sophomore Andres Arcila (Cartagena, Colombia) looks to build off his freshman campaign, when he tallied two goals and three assists. Arcila's classmate, Alex Pozesky (Columbia, Pa.), is another weapon that Echeverry and his staff hope benefited from the experiences he went through in his first season. Pozesky played big minutes for Seton Hall, starting all 16 games and playing every minute for the final 13 fixtures of the campaign. The rich amount of experience he got led to a spot on the All-BIG EAST Rookie Team for Pozesky.
Other midfielders to watch for Seton Hall are junior Patrick Burd (Hillsborough, N.J.), who showed improvements as last season went on, starting the final nine fixtures of the season, and sophomore Spencer Burkhardt (Palmyra, Pa.) who scored a pair of goals during his rookie season in 2015.
On the attacking front, it's been new talent that has made an impact during the preseason. Sophomore transfer Jordan Kinoshi (Welwyn Garden City, England) joins the program after he collected seven goals and four assists in the 2015 season at Monroe College. The addition of Kinoshi has added speed up top for The Hall. Joining him and generating some finishes that have really impressed in the preseason is senior transfer Matheus Miranda (Belo Horizonte, Brazil). A native of Brazil, Miranda played for Graceland University from 2012-14 before transferring.
Kinoshi and Miranda look to bolster an offense that returns senior Danny Bartok (Union, N.J.), who is the team-leading returning scorer after he put up four goals on the season. Freshmen Jonathan Jimenez (Cape Coral, Fla.) is another powerful attacking option up top who can see plenty of time early during his SHU career.
As the season arrives, the goal in mind for the Pirates is to set the tone with an early win to break out of the gates the right way. Seton Hall saw the tough times last year, but Echeverry anticipates that this team is better off because of those. The Hall will try to flip the script that saw them drop eight one-goal matches last season on Friday, when the Pirates take the short drive to Jersey City to visit Saint Peter's for their regular season opener.
Kick-off on Friday will be at 4 p.m. as the book will open on 2016 before Seton Hall plays its home opener on Sunday at 7 p.m. against Stony Brook. If you cannot make it out to Owen T. Carroll Field, the match will be broadcast for free on the Pirate Sports Network.
