Pirates Drop Home Opener on Sunday Night
8/28/2016 10:11:00 PM | Men's Soccer
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall men's soccer team (1-1-0) dropped its home opener on Sunday night, falling to Stony Brook (1-1-0) by a score of 2-0. With the setback, the Pirates split their opening weekend after a 3-1 win on Friday at Saint Peter's.
The Seawolves struck in the 7th and 54th minutes, using goals from Serge Gamwanya and Eduardo Valle to build their two-goal advantage. Stony Brook held a slim 13-12 advantage in overall shots for the match with each team putting six on goal. Four different Pirates fired two shots to lead the way.
Jordan Kinsoshi (Welwyn Garden City, England) nearly put the Pirates ahead in the fourth minute when he broke in free on goal for a point-blank attempt that was turned aside. Following Stony Brook's early goal, The Hall had a pair of strong equalizing chances, first when Jonathan Jimenez (Cape Coral, Fla.) put a header on target following a corner in the 17th minute. Shawn Morrison (York, Pa.) made another prime bid in the 22nd minute but had his shot denied by SBU keeper Tom McMahon.
Turning Point
Before SBU doubled its lead early in the second half, Danny Bartok (Union, N.J.) and Patrick Burd (Hillsborough) both put attempts on target that were saved. Valle, who assisted on the Seawolves' first goal, made it 2-0 in the 54th minute on a broken play in the box. A high lob came into the area, and both Thibault Duval and Jarred Dass couldn't get a clean touch before Valle one-timed a finish past Julian Spindler (Weiserbach, Germany).
