Dadona, Bullpen Help Pirates Edge Michigan, 5-4

PORT ST. LUCIE, FLA. – Junior Rob Dadona (Staten Island, N.Y.) delivered a career-high three RBIs and the Seton Hall bullpen held Michigan to only one hit as the Pirates edged the Wolverines, 5-4, in the 2017 season-opener.
Playing left field for the first time in his collegiate career, Dadona was errorless and went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and three runs batted in.
The Pirates' bullpen consisting of Matt Leon (Bethlehem, Pa.), Anthony Pacillo (Lyndhurst, N.J.) and Zach Schellenger (Malvern, Pa.), allowed only one hit and no runs over the final 4.2 innings. Leon earned the victory, while Schellenger picked up the save. Both Leon and Pacillo stranded runners in scoring position to end innings.
Turning Point:
The Pirates rallied trailing 3-1 in the top of the fourth inning. Senior Mikael-Ali Mogues (New York, N.Y.) walked to lead off the inning. With one out, he advanced to second on a single by Mike Caputo (Morganville, N.J.). Jackson Martin (Collegeville, Pa.) followed with a single to right field and Mogues scored when the Michigan right fielder allowed the ball to get past him. Dadona then delivered a booming double over the right fielder's head to clear the bases and give The Hall a 4-3 advantage.
Michigan tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on a solo home run, but the Pirates took the lead for good on a Dadona's single in the sixth inning, which scored Martin.
Inside the Numbers:
- Senior Joe Poduslenko (Glen Mills, Pa.) reached base four times, including a double, a stolen base and two walks. He also had an RBI single in the third inning.
- Senior Matt Fortin (Nashua, N.H.) reached base three times, going 1-for-3 with a double and two walks.
- Martin went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base. His drag bunt single, stolen base and run scored in the sixth inning proved to be the game winner.
- Seton Hall starter Shane McCarthy (Fair Haven, N.J.) allowed four earned runs with four strikeouts and two walks in 4.1 innings pitched. He had a no decision.
- Seton Hall left eight men on base, while Michigan left nine.
- It's the first time the Pirates have opened the season with a victory since a 7-5 win at Oklahoma in 2014.
- With today's save, Schellenger now has seven for his career. His next save will tie him for eighth on Seton Hall's career list.
- Seton Hall improves to 2-1 all-time against Michigan
Seton Hall will return to action tomorrow when it continues its season-opening four-game series vs. Michigan in Port St. Lucie, Fla. with a doubleheader. First pitch of the first game is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. The Pirate Sports Network will again provide a free audio broadcast at SHUpirates.com.
