SHU Falls in 10 Innings in Game 1; Game 2 Suspended

PORT ST. LUCIE, FLA. – Senior Mike Caputo (Morganville, N.J.) went 3-for-4 with four RBIs, but the Seton Hall baseball team fell in 10 innings in a back-and-forth game one of Saturday's doubleheader to Michigan, 8-7.
The Wolverines were also leading 10-7 in game two before game was suspended due to darkness. The teams will play the final two innings of the suspended game at 10:00 am tomorrow morning before playing their final game of the four-game series. A full recap of that game will be available following its conclusion.
Seton Hall (1-1) took the lead with a pair of runs in both the top of the second and third innings. Caputo's two-RBI double in the top of the third gave The Hall a 4-1 advantage. Michigan rallied in the bottom of the fourth for a pair of runs off Pirate starter Cullen Dana (Montgomery, N.Y.) to cut the Seton Hall lead to 4-3.
After Seton Hall tacked on an insurance run on an RBI single by Caputo in the top of the fifth, the Wolverines took the lead with a three-run inning in the bottom of the frame.
Not to be outdone, the Pirates rallied, and Al Molina (Freehold, N.J.) tied the game in the top seventh. Molina led off with a single, advanced to second, and then third base on a pair of wild pitches, before scoring on a passed ball.
Michigan (1-1) again took the lead with a run in the bottom of the seventh, but the Pirates again rallied in the top of the eighth to tie the game at seven on a fielding error by Michigan third baseman Drew Lugbauer, which allowed Caputo to score.
Turning Point:
With the game tied at eight in the bottom of the 10th inning, Seton Hall reliever Chris Morris (Matawan, N.J.) began the inning with a walk and two hit batsmen. Sophomore Matt Ponsiglione (Staten Island, N.Y.) came on to pitch and was able strike out his first batter, but Miles Lewis followed with a single to right field to plate the winning run.
Inside the Numbers:
- Senior Ryan Testani (Shelton, Conn.) pitched masterfully in relief. The right-hander pitched three scoreless innings and allowed only two hits with two strikeouts and no walks.
- Freshman Noah Thompson (Frisco, Texas) made his collegiate debut and allowed one earned run over 1.2 innings pitched in relief of Dana.
- Molina went 2-for-5 with a double and two runs scored.
- Seton Hall left six men on base, while Michigan left nine.
- Seton Hall falls to 2-2 all-time against Michigan.
After the teams complete the suspended game two of Saturday's doubleheader, Seton Hall and Michigan will conclude the four-game series with a regularly scheduled final game.
