Pirates Rally, But Fall Short to Michigan, 10-7

PORT ST. LUCIE, FLA. – The Seton Hall baseball team rallied from a 9-0 deficit, but ultimately fell to Michigan, 10-7, in game two of a doubleheader that started on Saturday and ended with the final two innings on Sunday.
Michigan sent 14 men to the plate in the bottom of the first inning and scored all nine runs before a single out was recorded, chasing both starter Andrew Politi (Long Valley, N.J.) and reliever Billy Layne, Jr. (Cliffwood Beach, N.J.). Matt Ponsiglione (Staten Island, N.J.) was able to induce a double-play, and a strikeout ended the inning.
Facing a tall order, the Pirates started chipping away at the Wolverine lead in the top of the third inning. Back-to-back singles to start the inning by Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.) and Al Molina (Freehold, N.J.) set the table, and with one out, sophomore Chris Villa (Staten Island, N.Y.) launched a bases-clearing double down the left field line. After a single by freshman Connor Hood (Shrewsbury, Pa.), Mike Caputo (Morganville, N.J.) drove in Villa with an RBI double. After a Matt Toke (Three Bridges, N.J.) walk, Jackson Martin (Collegeville, Pa.) delivered a sacrifice fly to plate the fourth run of the inning and cut the Wolverine lead to 9-4.
After Michigan tacked on another insurance run in the bottom of the third, the Pirate offense went back to work in the top of the fourth inning. Following the same script as the third inning, Ramiz and Molina started the inning with back-to-back singles. Joe Poduslenko (Glen Mills, Pa.) followed with a walk to load the bases with no outs, and Villa came through with a two-RBI single. Three batters later with one out and the bases loaded again, Toke singled home Poduslenko to cut the Michigan lead to 10-7.
When the game resumed on Sunday morning, Seton Hall loaded the bases with one out in the top of the sixth, but stranded all three runners. The following inning, The Hall put two on with two outs, but again, couldn't push the across.
Inside the Numbers:
- Freshman Ricky DeVito (Staten Island, N.Y.) made a highly successful collegiate debut. The right-hander tossed three scoreless innings of relief, allowing just one hit, while striking out four with no walks.

- Villa finished 4-for-4 with two doubles and drove in a career-high four runs.

- Caputo went 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
