Poduslenko's Ninth Inning Homer Caps Comeback
2/19/2017 3:40:00 PM | Baseball
PORT ST. LUCIE, FLA. – Senior Joe Poduslenko (Glen Mills, Pa.) launched a three-run home run with one out in the top of the ninth inning to cap a five-run inning and propel the Seton Hall baseball team to an 8-6 comeback victory over Michigan on Sunday.
The victory gives the Pirates a split of the four-game season-opening series against the Wolverines.
Seton Hall (2-2) jumped out front early with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning. Senior Jackson Martin (Collegeville, Pa.) delivered a two-RBI single with the bases loaded to give The Hall an early 2-0 advantage.
Michigan however, got a run back in the bottom of the second, and then struck for four runs off Seton Hall starter Zach Prendergast (Horsham, Pa.) in the bottom of the third to take a 5-2 lead.
Turning Point:
Trailing 6-3 entering the ninth inning, the Pirates began their comeback with one out. Matt Fortin (Nashua, N.H.) walked, and then Sebastiano Santorelli (Tuckahoe, N.Y.) and Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.) had back-to-back singles to load the bases. Al Molina (Freehold, N.J.) followed with a single to left field to score two runs and cut the Pirate deficit to 6-5. Poduslenko then hit his towering three-run home run over the left field fence to cap a five-run inning and give the Pirates an 8-6 lead.
Inside the Numbers:
- Poduslenko finished 2-for-5 with a home run, four RBIs and a run scored.
- Junior Zach Schellenger (Malvern, Pa.) earned the victory with two innings of perfect relief. He struck out five of the six batters he faced.
- Mike Alescio (Fair Haven, N.J.) also had two hits for the Pirates.
- Martin and Molina each had two RBIs.
- Senior Anthony Pacillo (Lyndhurst, N.J.) retired all four batters he faced in 1.1 innings.
- Prendergast received a no decision after allowing five earned runs over five innings with three walks and two strikeouts.
- Both teams left six men on base.
- It's the first time Seton Hall has won despite trailing in the ninth inning since defeating Villanova last season on April 22.
- Poduslenko's home run is the first for any Pirate this season and the fourth of his career.
- Seton Hall improves to 3-2 all-time against Michigan.
Seton Hall will return to action next weekend when it travels to San Diego, California for the 2017 Tony Gwynn Classic. The Pirates will open the tournament against Tennessee on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 pm ET.
