SAN DIEGO, CALIF. – Senior Joe Poduslenko (Glen Mills, Pa.) reached base five times, but the Seton Hall baseball team fell to Tennessee, 12-5, in the opening game of the 2017 Tony Gwynn Classic on Friday.
Â
Poduslenko went 3-for-3 with a triple, an RBI, a run scored and two walks.
Â
Seton Hall starting pitcher Shane McCarthy (Fair Haven, N.J.) retired the Volunteers in order in the first inning, but ran into trouble in the third. With one out, Tennessee recorded three straight hits, the latter two of the extra-base variety which drove in runs. After a second out was recorded, a single by Brodie Leftridge gave the Volunteers a 3-0 lead. Tennessee went on to score two more times in the third inning and five times in the fourth inning, capped by a two-run home run by Benito Santiago.
Â
The Pirates got on the scoreboard with a two-out rally in the top of the fifth inning. Senior Jackson Martin (Collegeville, Pa.) tripled off the wall in right field, and junior Rob Dadona (Staten Island, N.Y.) followed with an RBI single through the left side. After singles by Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.) and Al Molina (Freehold, N.J.) loaded the bases, Poduslenko walked to force in the Pirates' second run.
Â
The Hall scored single runs in each of the final three innings.
