Early Home Runs Fell Pirates at No. 2 Florida

GAINESVILLE, FLA. – Florida batters hit three home runs through the first five innings and the Seton Hall baseball team fell to the second-ranked Gators, 8-0, on Friday.
Seton Hall starter Shane McCarthy (Fair Haven, N.J.) allowed five runs over the first two innings, and settled down afterward, but the damage had been done. The junior performed well in the late innings, finishing with 6.2 innings pitched.
Florida's J.J. Schwartz hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning, and Dalton Guthrie hit a two-run shot in the bottom of the second to give the Gators a 5-0 lead. UF's Keenan Bell hit a solo home run in the fifth inning.
The Pirates weren't without their share of offensive opportunities against Florida Alex Faedo. The Hall put runners on second and third in the fourth, and loaded the bases in the sixth inning, but couldn't drive in the runners.
Inside the Numbers:
- Seton Hall recorded six hits by six different players.
- McCarthy finished with 6.2 innings pitched, allowing six earned runs while striking out two and walking two.
- Junior Matt Leon (Bethlehem, Pa.) allowed one unearned run over 1.1 innings of relief.
- Seton Hall left eight men on base, while Florida left seven.
- This was the first-ever meeting between Seton Hall and Florida.
- Seton Hall was shut out for only the second time this season.
