GAINESVILLE, FLA. – Sophomore Cullen Dana (Montgomery, N.Y.) pitched 6.1 strong innings, but the Seton Hall baseball team dropped game two of Saturday's doubleheader to No. 2 Florida, 4-3.
Dana allowed only two earned runs and matched his career-high with nine strikeouts with only one walk. He received a no decision.
The Hall took a 3-0 lead with a big top of the third inning. Mike Alescio (Fair Haven, N.J.) and Chris Villa (Staten Island, N.Y.) led off with back-to-back singles. Freshman Connor Hood (Shrewsbury, Pa.) reached when Florida starting pitcher Brady Singer threw wide of first base, which allowed Alescio to score the first run of the game. Rob Dadona (Staten Island, N.Y.) followed with an RBI ground out to second to make the score 2-0. Junior Al Molina (Freehold, N.J.) capped off the scoring with an RBI double, which drove in Hood.
Turning Point:
Florida started chipping away at the Seton Hall lead, scoring single runs in the bottom of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. In the eighth, reliever Andrew Politi (Long Valley, N.J.) allowed a leadoff walk, followed by a double. With Rick DeVito (Staten Island, N.Y.) now on the mound, a sacrifice fly allowed Florida's fourth run to score. DeVito did a good job preventing further damage, but the Gators had the lead.
Inside the Numbers:
- Villa was the lone Pirate with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with a run scored.
- Freshman Matt Toke (Three Bridges, N.J.) reached base twice, going 1-for-3 with a walk.
- Seton Hall left six men on base, while Florida left five.
- Seton Hall falls to 1-2 all-time against Florida.
Seton Hall will return to action on Friday, March 17 when it makes its 2017 home debut at Owen T. Carroll Field. The Pirates will host the Strikeout Cancer Classic and welcome Manhattan, Brown and Lehigh to South Orange. The Hall will face Manhattan on Friday at 4:00 p.m. The games will have a live video stream via the Pirate Sports Network at SHUpirates.com.
