Ramiz, Layne, Jr. Lift Pirates Past Stetson, 5-1
3/7/2017 11:51:00 PM | Baseball
DELAND, FLA. – Junior Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.) went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and Billy Layne, Jr. (Cliffwood Beach, N.J.) earned his first collegiate win as the Seton Hall baseball team downed Stetson, 5-1, on Tuesday.
Layne was brilliant through five scoreless innings, allowing only four hits with four strikeouts and no walks.
The Pirates got all the runs they would need in the top of the second inning. Matt Fortin (Nashua, N.H.) led off with a single through the right side. Chris Villa (Staten Island, N.Y.) followed with a single up the middle, and Mike Alescio (Fair Haven, N.J.) singled down the right field line to load the bases with no outs. Rob Dadona (Staten Island, N.Y.) drove in Fortin with the game's first run on a single to right field, but Alescio was forced out at second, which stuck Dadona with a fielder's choice. Al Molina (Freehold, N.J.) followed with an RBI single to left field to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead.
Clinging to a 2-1 lead, the Pirates erupted for three insurance runs in the top of the ninth. Stetson loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the ninth, but Ryan Testani (Shelton, Conn.) pitched out of the jam to record his second save of the season.
