Toke, Pirates Down Rutgers, 9-6
4/18/2017 7:17:00 PM | Baseball
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Freshman Matt Toke (Three Bridges, N.J.) collected three hits and got on base four times as the Seton Hall baseball team downed Rutgers, 9-6, on Tuesday.
The Pirates got on the scoreboard first in the top of the second inning, thanks to some questionable Rutgers defense. Toke led off the inning with an infield single. Junior Mike Alescio (Fair Haven, N.J.) followed with a ground ball to third base, but Rutgers' Kyle Walker threw high of first base, and Toke came all the way around to score.
Leading off the fifth inning, Chris Villa (Staten Island, N.Y.) struck out, but reached first base on a wild pitch. He then hustled to second as an errant throw got away from the first baseman. A perfect sacrifice bunt by Connor Hood (Shrewsbury, Pa.) advanced Villa to third, and safety squeeze bunt by Rob Dadona (Staten Island, N.Y.) drove in Villa to give The Hall a 2-1 lead.
The first three batters reached base vs. reliever Matt Leon (Bethlehem, Pa.) to begin the bottom of the fifth, resulting in the tying run coming in to score. Matt Ponsiglione (Staten Island, N.Y.) entered and struck out two batters, but allowed an RBI single with two outs to give the Scarlet Knights a 3-2 lead.
Turning Point:
With one out in the top of the sixth inning, Rutgers walked three straight Pirates. Mike Caputo (Morganville, N.J.) grounded back to the pitcher, but Christian Campbell threw high to the plate, and Al Molina (Freehold, N.J.) scored the tying run. Villa followed with a two-RBI double into the right field corner to give The Hall a 5-3 advantage.
Inside the Numbers:
- Seton Hall starter Andrew Politi (Long Valley, N.J.) allowed one run over three innings with five strikeouts and two walks in a no decision.
- Toke went 3-for-4 with a walk, an RBI and three runs scored.
- Freshman Corey Sawyer (Kearny, N.J.) struck out his lone batter to end the fifth inning and earned his first career victory.
- Freshman Noah Thompson (Frisco, Texas) pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his first career save.
- Villa had a double, a walk, a run scored and two RBIs.
- Seton Hall loaded the bases in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.
- Seton Hall left 11 men on base, while Rutgers left nine.
Seton Hall will return to action tomorrow when it hosts Rutgers at Owen T. Carroll Field in the finale of this brief, home-and-home series. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
