SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Junior Rob Dadona (Staten Island, N.Y.) hit a two-out, inside-the-park home run in the bottom of the 12th inning to win a wild, back-and-forth game for the Seton Hall baseball team, 10-9, over Rutgers on Wednesday.
The Pirates trailed 4-0 early on, but scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. With the bases loaded, freshman Tyler Shedler-McAvoy (Allendale, N.J.) drilled a three-run triple to right-center field. In the sixth inning, the Pirates tied the game on an RBI triple by Jackson Martin (Collegeville, Pa.) and took the lead, 5-4, on a sacrifice fly by Joe Poduslenko (Glen Mills, Pa.).
Rutgers however, struck back with two runs in the top of the seventh and a run in the top of the eighth to take a 7-5 advantage. In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Pirates rallied with two outs, and RBI singles by Mike Caputo (Morganville, N.J.) and Poduslenko, tied the game at seven.
Turning Point:
After scoring twice in the top of the ninth, the Scarlet Knights appeared poised to earn a split of the two-game series, but the Pirates rallied yet again. With one out, Dadona walked, Shedler-McAvoy singled and Chris Villa (Staten Island, N.Y.) walked to load the bases. Poduslenko followed with a walk to force in the Pirates' eighth run. Caputo then hit into a fielder's choice, but Shedler-McAvoy was able to score the tying run and force extra innings.
With two outs and no one on base in the bottom of the 12th inning, Dadona launched a deep shot over the head of the Rutgers' center fielder, just to the right of straight-away center field. Dadona came all the way around to score with the winning run.
