QUEENS, N.Y. – Sophomore Cullen Dana (Montgomery, N.Y.) tossed seven scoreless innings and senior Matt Fortin (Nashua, N.H.) drove in three runs as the Seton Hall baseball team shut out St. John's, 7-0, on Saturday.
Through the first five innings, Dana and St. John's Jeff Belge were locked in a pitchers' duel. The starting pitchers gave up a combined three hits as both offenses struggled to get started.
The Pirates finally broke through offensively with some clutch two-out hitting in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs and runners on second and third base, Fortin doubled to left field to drive in the first two runs of the game. Freshman Matt Toke (Three Bridges, N.J.) followed by muscling a single up the middle to score Fortin and give The Hall a 3-0 advantage.
Fortin's second double of the game knocked in Joe Poduslenko (Glen Mills, Pa.) two batters into the top of the eighth inning to extend The Hall's lead to 4-0.
The Pirates scored three more insurance runs in the top of the ninth, two of which came on a two-run home run by Poduslenko, his team-leading sixth of the season.
Inside the Numbers:
- Dana allowed no runs and only four hits over seven innings to earn the victory. He struck out eight batters and walked only two.
