Dana, Pirates Shut Out Villanova, 2-0, in Game One
5/14/2017 2:07:00 PM | Baseball
PLYMOUTH MEETING, PA – Sophomore Cullen Dana (Montgomery, N.Y.) tossed a complete-game shutout as the Seton Hall baseball team defeated Villanova, 2-0, in a seven-inning game one of Sunday's doubleheader.
Seton Hall got the offense started utilizing some "small ball" in the top of the second inning. Junior Al Molin (Freehold, N.J.) drew a four-pitch leadoff walk, and advanced to second on a single through the right side by Mike Alescio (Fair Haven, N.J.). After Chris Villa (Staten Island, N.Y.) successfully sacrificed both runners into scoring position, Mike Caputo (Morganville, N.J.) put down a perfect squeeze bunt to plate Molina with the first run of the game.
Junior Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.) walked to lead off the third inning, stole second and came in to score on a two-out RBI single by Matt Toke (Three Bridges, N.J.) to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead.
Inside the Numbers:
- Dana scattered just four hits over seven innings with eight strikeouts and only one walk to earn the victory.
- Ramiz reached base three times, going 2-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and a stolen base.
- Alescio went 2-for-3 with a double.
- Sophomore Chris Villa (Staten Island, N.Y.) picked off a runner at first base and threw out a runner trying to steal second, both in the third inning.
- Seton Hall left six men on base, while Villanova left three.

- The Hall is seven games over .500 (27-20) for the first time this season.
- The Pirates have now allowed only one run over their last four games.
- This was the sixth shutout of the season for Seton Hall.
