Toke, Pirates Fall Short at SELU, 10-7
5/19/2017 11:32:00 PM | Baseball
HAMMOND, LA. – Freshman Matt Toke (Three Bridges, N.J.) reached base five times, but the Seton Hall baseball team fell at Southeastern Louisiana, 10-7, on Friday.
Southeastern Louisiana got their offense started early and often, striking for three runs in the bottom of the second inning off Seton Hall starter Zach Prendergast (Horsham, Pa.). In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Lions score two more runs off reliever Cullen Dana (Montgomery, N.Y.).
The Pirates threw both Prendergast and Dana, with limited work, to adequately prepare for next week's BIG EAST Championship in Omaha, Neb.
Down 7-0 in the top of the seventh inning, junior Rob Dadona (Staten Island, N.Y.) hit a two-out two-run home run to cut the deficit to 7-2.
After Southeastern Louisiana scored three more times in the bottom of the seventh to extend their lead to 10-2, the Pirates sent 10 men to the plate in the top of the eighth and scored five runs to make the game close. Junior Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.) led off the inning with his first career home run. Later in the inning, senior Matt Fortin (Nashua, N.H.) delivered a two-RBI pinch-hit double. But alas, the Pirates couldn't draw closer than 10-7.
Inside the Numbers:
- Prendergast took the loss with three runs allowed over two innings.
- Toke went 4-for-4 with a walk and a stolen base.
- Sophomore Matt Ponsiglione (Staten Island, N.Y.) tossed a perfect third inning.
- Dadona reached base three times, going 2-for-3 with a home run, a walk, a run scored and two RBIs.
- Freshman Rick DeVito (Staten Island, N.Y.) tossed a scoreless eighth inning.
- Senior Mike Caputo (Morganville, N.J.) went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.

- With two hits today, Caputo has reached the 100-hit career milestone.
- Prendergast's start today was the 39th of his career, which ranks fifth on the Seton Hall career starts list.
- Toke has now hit safely in 18 of his last 19 games.
- Dadona's home run is his second of the season, but the first that has cleared the home run fence.
- It's the 24th time this season the Pirates have recorded at least 10 hits.
- Seton Hall falls to 1-2 all-time against Southeastern Louisiana.
Seton Hall will return to action tomorrow when it completes its three-game series at Southeastern Louisiana and finishes the 2017 regular season. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. ET.
