Pirate Bats Erupt in 14-9 Win Over Seattle
3/2/2018 6:35:00 PM | Baseball
The first six batters in the Pirates' starting lineup all reached base at least three times, led by sophomore Matt Toke (Three Bridges, N.J.) who reached in five of his six plate appearances. Freshman Casey Dana (Montgomery, N.Y.) reached base four times and finished the game only a home run shy of the cycle.
Neither starting pitcher made it past the third inning in a see-saw offensive affair. Seattle scored three runs off Pirate starter Shane McCarthy (Fair Haven, N.J.) in the bottom of the first inning, but The Hall clawed back with single runs in the second and third, before a two-run fourth gave it a 4-3 lead.
The Seton Hall lead was short-lived however, as the Redhawks burst out for four runs off reliever Tyler Burnham (East Brunswick, N.J.) in the fifth inning to take a 7-4 advantage.
Turning Point:
Trailing by three runs, Seton Hall's offense scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to take the lead for good. Senior Mike Alescio (Fair Haven, N.J.) and Toke led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Junior Sebastiano Santorelli (Tuckahoe, N.Y.) followed with a fielder's choice, which plated a run. Dana then doubled to center field, putting two runs in scoring position with only one out. Pinch hitter Nick Dabrio (Jackson, N.J.) followed with a two-RBI single up the middle to tie the game at 7. The next batter, Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.) laced a double down the left field line to score Dabrio and give The Hall an 8-7 lead.
With the game still close, the Pirates put it out of reach in the top of the eighth inning, sending 11 men to the plate in a 6-run outburst to put them up, 14-8.
