Shedler-McAvoy went 2-for-4 with a run scored and the big two-run triple. Senior Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.) reached base a team-high four times, going 2-for-2 with two walks, two runs scored and two stolen bases.
Trailing 1-0, Seton Hall struck for two runs in the bottom of the second. With the bases loaded, a balk by Xavier starter Damien Richard forced in the Pirates' first run. With one out, senior Rob Dadona (Staten Island, N.Y.) grounded into a fielder's choice, but on the play, Shedler-McAvoy scored to put the Pirates in front, 2-1.
The lead however, was short-lived. With two outs in the top of the third inning, Xavier's Joe Gellenbeck hit a two-run home run off Pirate starter Shane McCarthy (Fair Haven, N.J.) to put the Musketeers back in front, 3-2.
Turning Point:
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Sebastiano Santorelli (Tuckahoe, N.Y.) singled up the middle, Ramiz walked and both moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. With two outs, Shedler-McAvoy hit the ball to the wall in right-center field for a stand-up triple, driving in the tying and go-ahead runs.
With the Pirates leading 4-3, the Seton Hall pitching staff shut down Xavier the rest of the way. McCarthy went six strong innings to earn the victory. Sophomore Corey Sawyer (Kearny, N.J.) tossed two scoreless innings of relief, and senior Matt Leon (Bethlehem, Pa.) pitched a perfect ninth for the save.
