
Pirates Fall After Surrendering Early Runs

The Hawks scored in each of the first four innings in all, jumping out to a 10-1 lead. Four Pirates combined to keep Monmouth off the scoreboard for the final five innings, but the deficit was too much to overcome for Seton Hall's offense.
Sophomore Blake Espinal (Bronx, N.Y.) tossed two scoreless innings of relief with two strikeouts. Espinal was followed by Ryan McLinskey (Pearl River, N.Y.), Matt Ponsiglione (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Corey Sawyer (Kearny, N.J.), who all tossed a scores inning.
Offensively, senior Mike Alescio (Fair Haven, N.J.) delivered a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the first to plate the first Pirate run. In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Pirates scored two more runs on an RBI double by Connor Hood (Shrewsbury, Pa.) and an RBI ground out by Jerry Huntzinger (Staten Island, N.Y.).
Inside the Numbers:
- Sophomore Tyler Shedler-McAvoy (Allendale, N.J.) was the lone Pirate with multiple hits. He went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base.
- Billy Layne, Jr. (Cliffwood Beach, N.J.) started for the Pirates and took the loss. He allowed three runs in an inning of work.
- Espinal tossed two scoreless innings and allowed only one hit with two strikeouts.
- McLinskey pitched a scoreless inning with two strikeouts, a hit and a walk.
- Ponsiglione pitched a scoreless eighth inning.
- Sawyer didn't allow a run in the ninth inning and struck out the side.
- Seton Hall had seven hits, while Monmouth had 16. Seton Hall committed one errors, while the Hawks had none.
- Seton Hall left six men on base, while the Hawks left 14.
- Monmouth's Ryan Steckline picked up the win in relief.
- Seton Hall used a season-high eight pitchers in the game.
- The loss drops the Pirates to 14-14-1 overall on the season, while Monmouth improves to 13-20.
- Seton Hall is now 37-8-1 all-time against Monmouth.
- The Pirates used a season-high 25 players in today's game.
Seton Hall will return to action on Friday, April 20 when travels to Indianapolis to begin a three-game series at Butler. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
