Pirates Open Mean Green Classic With 4-3 Win

DENTON, Texas – Hailey Arteaga (Upland, Calif.) knocked in two runs and Darby Pandolfo (Massapequa, N.Y.) hit a home run to lift the Seton Hall softball team (3-3) to a 4-3 victory over Northwestern State on Friday evening at North Texas' Lovelace Stadium. The contest was the first for the Pirates on day one of the Mean Green Classic.
The Pirates scored the first four runs of the game, then got clutch pitching from Reganne Camp (Bloomington, Ill.) and Kelsey Gumm (Spokane, Wash.) late to stave off a Lady Demon comeback attempt. Arteaga's two RBIs were part of a 3-for-3 day as she continued her torrid start to the 2019 campaign.

The Pirates continue play at the Mean Green Classic tomorrow, facing Northwestern State again along with the host North Texas.

How it Happened
- Neither team made a mark on the scorecard until the top of the third inning, when Pandolfo gave the Pirates a 1-0 lead with a solo home run
- Arteaga would go on to double the lead later in the frame, bringing home Jaden Tate (Las Vegas, Nev.) with a run-scoring double
- The Pirates tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth by way of a Janae Barracato (Hempstead, N.Y.) RBI double and an RBI single from Arteaga
- The Lady Demons struck back and got two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but Camp limited the damage and strander a pair of runners with a strikeout and fly ball
- In the decisive bottom of the seventh NSU pushed a run across to get within one with the game-tying run in scoring position, but Gumm came up with a game-ending strikeout to close out a two-inning save
- The Hall finished with a slight 7-6 edge in hits and committed two errors versus one for NSU
- The Pirates left only three runners on base for the game, while stranding seven Lady Demons
- Arteaga and Tate combined for five hits, with Tate scoring a pair of runs
- Camp allowed a single earned run over 5.0 innings to pick up the win, striking out five
- Gumm secured her second career save with 2.0 innings of one run ball, striking out a pair
The Pirates continue play at the Mean Green Classic tomorrow, facing Northwestern State again along with the host North Texas.
